Ke$ha’s New Release “Rainbow” Album Review and Cover Art

Ke$ha just released her third studio album on August 11th, 2017 five years after the release of “Warrior” back in 2012. The reason she couldn’t release music was that she was in a lengthy legal battle with her old producer Dr. Luke. Since then, she’s been involved in a contentious legal fight, having requested release from a recording contract she’d previously signed with the producer (and, by extension, with the label he eventually co-founded with Sony Music, Kemosabe Records). Now the legal battle is over and she has released a full-length album including 14 songs.

I know that in this age of digital technology no one buys CDs anymore but here I am! I always love supporting my favorite artists and buying their actual CDs so they earn more money to make more of the music I love. Did you know in order for the rights holders of an album to earn $10 (the cost of most digital downloads) from Spotify, an individual user would need to stream the tracks on it 1,190 times. I also love looking at the album art and I am going to give you the full experience of Ke$ha’s comeback album “Rainbow.”

The cover of the album is a beautiful back shot of her facing aliens, the ocean and space. I think this is a beautiful cover since it shows so much. She is turning her back on the negative and her past to look at all the possibilities the universe has to offer for her. In this album, a major theme is forgetting about the past and moving on, which this conveys so eloquently.

Here are some pictures I took of the CD myself:

First I love the fact that she is using a paperback copy for the album and not a hard one because it is simple, but the cover art and visuals do look better with the paperback.

The back of the album is even more beautiful. It shows a wonderful shot of Kesha and the song titles are in the form of a rainbow, which I think is a creative touch. I thought the picture of her in the back was going to be her looking up, but I like that she changed it up. This photoshoot was beautiful so I’m glad she used more images from it.

When you open up the album you get these pieces of art, which are very creative and go along with one of her tracks, “Spaceship” where she sings, “I’m waiting for my spaceship to come back to me, It’s coming back for me, I don’t really care if you believe it’s coming, back for me, yeah, I been living in a lonesome galaxy, But in my dreams, I see them come ‘n rescue me” She hints to this rough time in her life and what the Dr. Luke lawsuit has left her. For a long time she was very open about her depression and being in a bad place, but now that the battle is over and her music is finally out- she feels like she can be herself once again- which is very admirable.

This wouldn’t be a complete album review without seeing what the CD looks like! I like that it looks like a gem, but it could also be a color palette for painting. Kesha has said before that she was a girl that only used to wear black, but she has just recently accepted colors into her life, which shows her growth.

On the inside is the lyrics sheet and it is an entire rainbow! I love how she really pushed the theme for this album because I feel like all her songs really showcased the power and beauty of a rainbow. Also in the picture, you can see me smiling because Kesha’s music is finally out!

Overall I think this is Kesha’s best work she has ever done and I am so happy that she put out such a personal, yet well-done album. There have been multiple times I have teared up to tracks like “Praying,” “Rainbow,” and “Learn to Let Go” but found myself dancing to “Let ‘Em Talk,” “Woman,” and my personal favorite on the album “Boogie Feet.” The whole album is so eclectic and has songs that are influenced by her previous dance music, with some more passionate ballads. Also, the album has great features like the Eagles of Death Metal, Dap-King Horns and Dolly Parton! There is only a rainbow after a huge storm- and in this case, Kesha is the storm that will top the charts like she once did in 2010.

There are only a few times in life when an artist puts out an album that explains everything you’re feeling and going through and this is that album for me. I am so happy that Kesha is able to overcome her past and create something more beautiful than she could have ever imagined. Kesha is not just the party girl who sang “Tik Tok” but an inspiration to us all and an artist that sticks to her gut and prides herself on not letting men walk all over her. This is a beautiful album that I will remember for the rest of my life.

You can listen to the title track “Rainbow” here and all her songs on the album are on her VEVO channel.

All artwork is owned by Kesha and Kemosabe Records.
